Antiphonary from the XIIIth century containing chants for the liturgy of the Hours. The melodies are noted using neumes without lines. Essentially, this is a copy of Cod. Sang. 390/391 (“Hartker antiphonary”) completed by saint's days added after the completion of the Hartker antiphonary.

This is a collection of liturgical works from the monastery of Disentis, written in the second half of the 12th century, most likely around 1200. In sequence, the volume contains a calendar (pp. 2-13), a psalter (pp. 15-90) and a hymnary (pp. 91-110), a (mixed) capitulary and collectarium (pp. 116-186), as well as an antiphonary, a lectionary, and a homiliary (pp. 203-638). Highlights from the point of view of manuscript decoration include the initial “B” at the beginning of the psalter (p. 15) and a picture of the crucifixion (p. 89). This breviary is one of the very few surviving medieval manuscripts from the monastery of Disentis. The manuscript came to Kempten around 1300; as early as the 15th century, the Disentis Breviary was held in the Abbey Library of St. Gall.

The manuscript contains the readings for the nocturns of matins, the nightly office, on Sundays, feast days and weekdays. It includes the proprium de tempore from the first of Advent to the end of the ecclesiastical year (including the saints' feasts between Christmas and Epiphany). As the Matutinale does not have four readings per nocturn on Sundays, as was the practice in the Order of Saint Benedict, but only three, it cannot have been originally written for the Abbey of St. Gall. On the margins of p. 233/234 appear numerous additions from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries on the feast of the Trinity. Decoration consists of red lombards and simple initials, partially with incipient pen-flourishes (e.g., p. 75). The parchment has numerous holes, some of which have stitches. Numerous pages are trimmed below the text block. Strips from an eleventh-century liturgical manuscript are bound around the first and last quire of the codex as reinforcement (the back half of the strip around the last quire is paginated as p. 414/415). On the front board appears the offset of a page of a thirteenth-century psalter; on the back board, the offset of an eleventh-century sacramentary (?).

This codex, written in the 13th century, contains a lectionary for Matins for the saints' days and an antiphonary for the entire liturgical year. The antiphonary bears the title In nomine domini incipiunt antiphone secundum morem Marbacensis ecclesie. Nevertheless, this is probably not a manuscript from the reformed monastery of Marbach in Alsace. Based on the offices, which indicate a connection with St. Gall, it must rather be assumed that the manuscript originated in the monastery of the Canons Regular of St. Lawrence in Ittingen, which belonged to the monastery of St. Gall, but which followed the Consuetudines of Marbach. The fly leaf (p. 2/1) contains a large part of the Office of St. Gallus, probably from a manuscript from the 10th/11th century. Readings as well as chants (the latter ones with neumes) are recorded. The order of the responses and antiphons does not match that of the Hartker antiphonary, Cod. Sang. 391.

Martyrologium by Ado of Vienne († 875), the main part of which probably was not written in St. Gall, although the manuscript was kept there since the 11th century (supplements to the patron saints of St. Gall). At the end of the volume, there are annals-style notes about the comet of 1264, calendar dates, notes regarding the construction of the cities of Milan and Alexandria, the founding of the Cistercian Monastery of Wettingen, the discord between Emperor Frederick II and his son Henry VII around 1236 as well as the latter's imprisonment, and hexameters regarding the correct preparation of eucharistic bread (p. 601-602).

This small volume contains liturgical fragments. They come from six different manuscripts (overwhelmingly breviaries/psalters), of which sometimes multiple leaves, sometimes only a few lines survive. The first fragment (ff. 12r-34v) is written in Latin, but has German rubrics, which suggests a breviary for private use. As a note on f. Ar in his own hand indicates, Ildefons von Arx likely assembled this volume.

This small prayerbook contains four large textual units, of which three could be called Marian prayers. A short psalter that connects the first verse of each psalm with an Ave Maria (pp. 5–35), an extensive litany of saints (pp. 37–68), the “Joys of Mary” (pp. 69–180), and another short psalter that is structured like the first text, except that throughout it uses a different Psalm verse instead of the initial verse (pp. 180–200). The manuscript is entirely written by a skilled hand and contains rubrics and initials in red and blue ink. The text is preceded by two full-page illuminations (p. 2 Enthroned Virgin and Child, p. 3 the Flagellation of Christ). The mention of St. Abundius of Como (p. 56) suggests a possible place of origin for the codex. Thus Scherrer suggests that it could have been copied in Italy for Benedictines; Scarpatetti thinks that it was produced in or for a lay chapter or a women's convent. On p. C can be found a likely post-medieval ownership mark by a certain Jodokus Graislos in Greek script. In the eighteenth century, the book received its current, unadorned binding and an ownership mark of the St. Gall-dependent convent of St. Johann im Thurtal (p. 1), whence the manuscript came to the Abbey Library.

The manuscript contains the antiphons, invitatories, and responsories for certain offices of saints, and then the Alleluia verses and sequences for the feast-days of some saints. The majority of the chants are provided with adiastemmatic neumes. A note on p. 112, written before the turn of the 15th century, has neumatic notation on staves. As the leather covering on the spine and the back cover is entirely missing, the Gothic cover joint is very visible from the outside. According to the ownership note on p. 3, in the eighteenth century the manuscript was in the Abbey of St. Johann in Toggenburg.

Composite manuscript containing mainly theological texts and, as the largest part (pp. 61–212), the Vocabularius Ex quo. The remaining works are a commentary on the hymnal, where each verse of a hymn alternates with the corresponding explanation (pp. 1–56), a short treatise De humani cordis instabilitate (pp. 57–60), sermons (pp. 212–229, 240–268 and 268–273), the life of Albert of Trapani (Albertus Siculus) (pp. 230–239), the Speculum humanae salvationis (pp. 274–335), a short treatise on virtues and vices called Etymachia or Lumen animae (pp. 335–345), excerpts from Jerome, Augustine and others (pp. 346–368), as well as the Speculum ecclesiae by Hugo de S. Caro (pp. 370–391). The latter is written on a parchment palimpsest , the underwriting (“scriptio inferior”) is in Rotunda script. Four red and bleu fleuronné initials from the underwriting have survived (p. 372, 373 and 375). The last pages contain responsories for Christmas (Descendit de celis deus verus), the Feast of Saint Mark (Beatissimus Marcus discipulus) and Commune plurimum martyrum (Viri gloriosi sanguinem fuderunt), and also the Easter trope (Quem queritis) with melodies in square notation on four lines (pp. 392–394). The manuscript consists of parchment and paper, sometimes even mixed within one quire. This codex has been at the monastery of St. Gall at least since 1553/64 (library stamp p. 60).

Hagiographic manuscript collection containing the lives of numerous saints, especially the Benedictine saints, written and compiled in the Cloister of St. Gall between the 10th and 13th centuries. Among other items it contains the lives of saints Remaclus, Gangold, Willibrord (originally written by Alcuin of York), Ulrich of Augsburg (originally written by Abbot Bern of Reichenau) and Magnus (older and newer lives). Between the newer and older versions of the lives of Magnus is a pen sketch of the healing of a blind person in Bregenz on the Bodensee.

This codex contains the miracles of Saint Thomas of Canterbury, which the Benedictine monk Benedict of Peterborough began to collect after Thomas' murder on December 29, 1170. The manuscript, which has beautiful initials with scroll ornamentation on p. 12, was written by two hands in the Southwestern region of Germany towards the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century. The collection of miracles is divided into four books, of which the last nine chapters (IV.95-96, V.1-4, VI.1-3 of this edition) and the following letter from the Bishop of Durham, Hugh du Puiset, are not numbered. The manuscript is listed in the Monastery of St. Gall catalog from the year 1461.

This manuscript contains the main work of the Parisian early scholastic Petrus Comestor († 1179), his Historia scholastica; completed around 1169-1173, it is a summa of biblical history from Creation to Ascension. It is written by three late 12th/early 13th century hands, with marginal notes by several hands from the 13th to the 15th century. At the bottom of p. 2 is the writer's name, Uolricus.

This extensive volume was copied at the turn of the thirteenth to fourteenth century by a single hand with a somewhat varying ductus. It contains a thematically ordered compilation of short examples and observations on virtues and vices (pp. 3–658) that may have been taken from Etienne de Bourbon or Humbertus de Romanis. This summa is made accessible by an index (pp. 659–661), written in a later hand, which hand also completed the foliation. The manuscript is rubricated throughout and contains two-line red and blue lombards. On the front flyleaf can be found a fragment of a charter from 1295. The red-leather binding has the remains of a medieval clasp.

This 13th century manuscript is of unknown origin. It contains (front pastedown-p. 185) an abridged version of Wernher von Schussenried's Decretum Gratiani from 1207, followed by two ordines iudiciarii, i.e. writings on the Roman-canonical process, which were produced in the last quarter of the 12th century by the two Englishmen Richard de Mores (pp. 186-271) and Rodoicus Modicipassus (formerly attributed to an Otto Papiensis; pp. 276-380). In the margins of the abridged version of the Decretum Gratiani (front pastedown-p. 35), the influential 1216 Ordo iudiciarius by the jurist Tancred of Bologna was added as a third procedural document, but was left incomplete.

This manuscript consists of three parts. The first part (p. 1-90) with the summa of penitence or of confessions by Heinrich von Barben (pp. 3-90), is written in textualis and, according to the colophon (p. 90), it was completed on February 24, 1309. The second part (pp. 91-146) contains a catalog of questions for confession (p. 91a-145a), written in a 13th or 14th century textualis, which was supplemented in the 15th century with information on the solution of legal abbreviations (pp. 145a-145b). The third part (pp. 147-206) contains a collection of documents and formulas from Northern Germany (pp. 147a-205b), written in the 14th century by two different hands in a semi-cursive minuscule and in a cursive book hand. The three-part manuscript can likely be found in the catalog of St. Gall Abbey from 1461.

The manuscript transmits Vincentius Hispanus' apparatus to the Compilatio tertia. Composed in 1210–1215, this apparatus is an extensive, stable series of glosses on a collection of Pope Innocent III's decretals. This manuscript has the distinction of being a thirteenth-century Italian pecia-exemplar of this gloss-apparatus (without the text of the Compilatio tertia). Pecia-exemplars served as approved sources for the serial copying at universities of legal texts and their apparatus of glosses.

The confessors' manual of Magister Simon borrows extensively from Raymond of Peñafort's Summa de poenitentia and Summa de matrimonio. The text contains an indictment that suggests an origin in the Diocese of Paris around 1250 or a little later. According to the ownership note on p. 1, the manuscript, written in two hands in the second half of the thirteenth century or the first half of the fourteenth century, entered the Abbey library of St. Gall by 1478 at the latest.

This ecclesiastical law manuscript contains a collection of papal decretals generally known as the Breviarium extravagantium or Compilatio prima, compiled by Bernhard of Pavia, the first decretalist, in about 1189-1190. In addition to older glosses of unspecified origin, on some pages next to the two columns of the Textus inclusus there are extracts taken from the first review of a set of glosses by Tankred of Bologna, which he issued in about 1210-1215. The text, the initials, and the glosses date from the end of the 12th century or possibly the beginning of the 13th century in France.

A representative copy of the decretals of Pope Gregory IX (Pope 1227-1241) in a Gothic-rotunda script from Italy. The text of the decretals is surrounded on each page by the so-called Glossa Ordinaria, a juridical commentary by the canon law specialist Bernardus de Botone of Parma († 1266), which has been written to encircle the main text. The commentary in turn has been extensively edited and glossed at a later time. Each of the five parts is decorated with a scene portraying its content.

This two-part manuscript was written in Italy in the period between the middle of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. It preserves writings concerning procedural law, among them the little known Ordo iudiciarius Quoniam ut ait apostolus, as well as finding aids and surveys on decretal law. The manuscript probably came into the possession of the St. Gall citizen Johannes Widembach († 1456) from a Canon from Zurich, and has been held by the Abbey Library at least since the 16th century.

This manuscript, decorated with fleuronné initials and occasional pen drawings, was written in Italy in the second half of the 13th century or at the latest at the beginning of the 14th century. It preserves the Codex Justinianus (Books 1–9), the Great Gloss of Accursius associated with it, as well as many more glosses in the margins. The manuscript came to the Abbey Library at the latest in the 16th century via the two St. Gall citizens Conrad Särri and Johannes Widembach († around 1456).

This parchment manuscript essentially contains Summae of most parts of the Corpus iuris civilis, namely books 1–9 of the Codex, the Institutions and the Digest. The vast majority of these textbook-like summaries have been ascribed to the Bologna jurist Azo Portius († 1220). The manuscript, produced in Northern Italy in the thirteenth or fourteenth century, presents at the beginning, on p. 7a, two larger painted initials, one of which features a dragon, and then follows numerous smaller pen-flourished initials.

This four-part manuscript was written primarily in the second half of the 13th century or in the first half of the 14th century in Italy and perhaps partly in France. It preserves the Tres libri Codicis (Books 10–12 of the Codex Justinianus) including the glosses, the Libri feudorum, the corresponding Glossa ordinaria , as well as other lesser writings. Particularly valuable are the pre-Accursian glosses to the Tres libri Codicis, which have been preserved partly in their original form. The manuscript contains the Sentences of Magister Bandinus, author of an abridged version of Peter Lombard's Libri quatuor sententiarum. As Ildefons von Arx observes (p. 1), the text is identical to that of Cod. Sang. 769 except that this copy has the fourth book, dedicated, like that of the Lombard, to the sacraments (pp. 147-186). Copied in two columns, rubricated and decorated with simple red initials at the beginning of chapters, the text has been revised, corrected, and completed by additions.

The manuscript is composed of several units and includes many texts with varying content. The first part (pp. 1-106), in paper, contains a synodal book (pp. 1-81), as well as the Auctoritates sanctorum (pp. 82-105), which, according to the colophon (p. 105a), were copied by Johannes Gaernler in 1378 or 1379. Below the colophon is a drawing, perhaps made by the copyist, representing a man (a king?) holding a cup in hand. Several parchment quires follow (pp. 107-224) with sermons, provisions for penance, etc., dating partly from the thirteenth century and partly from the fourteenth. The end of the manuscript, in paper (pp. 225-471), includes, alongside the penitential of Johannes de Deo (pp. 284-315), sermons, as well as ascetic and theological texts, which were copied in the fourteenth century (pp. 316-471). According to a note of possession (p. 471), the manuscript, or at least its last part, was in the Abbey of St. Gall at the end of the fifteenth century at the latest. The binding has a beautiful interlace pattern on the spine.

This collection primarily contains scholastic, doctrinal questions on the seven sacraments, as well as, at the work's end, the ten commandments (p. 140b). The two-column textualis is structured using red lombards, rubricated titles and initials. The parts of the questions are marked with inline red pieds-de-mouche. On the back of the endpaper (p. 142) is the library stamp of the St. Gallen Abbot Diethelm Blarer from 1553-1554. The front of the wooden board binding is covered with light-coloured leather. The dark-brown spine covering has, on the front cover, traces of a half-oval blind stamp. The front pastedown is an in-situ fragment, pasted in upside-down, of a very legible juristic text that mentions the Archbishop of Reims and the Bishop of Laon.

This Latin-German miscellany focuses on sermons. It is comprised of five parts of varying formats (Part I: pp. 5–48; Part II: pp. 49–84; Part III: pp. 85–108; Part IV: pp. 109–144; Part V: pp. 145–156), written by varying hands in Gothic minuscule script of varying size. The following constituent works have been identified. Part I transmits the Latin sermons of Berthold von Regensburg, namely four Sermones de dominicis (pp. 5-17, one column) as well as a further Sermo de dominicis, five Sermones de sanctis and a Sermo ad religiosos (pp. 21a-28b, two columns). Part II begins with the sermon Quando hominem… about John 18:1 (pp. 49a–67b, Hamesse 25446). Part III contains five Latin-German sermons alongside a prayer for a Pope Benedict (pp. 98-108). Next, part IV presents the Dialogus Beatae Mariae et Anselmi de passione Domini (pp. 109-124), which was attributed to the Archbishop Anselm of Canterbury in the Middle Ages. The pasteboard binding from the seventeenth or eighteenth century has a white leather cover with doubled scudding decoration as well as two green laces whose ends can still be seen. The table of contents by Pius Kolb has been extended by Ildefons von Arx (p. 1).

This is a complete copy of the Sententiae by Peter Lombard († 1160). The chapter titles are listed at the beginning of each book (p. 3–5, 91–93, 170–171, 229–231). There are several figurative initials in red with green, blue and light yellow (p. 6: Mass as well as Synagogue and Ecclesia; p. 172: Annunciation; p. 232: good Samaritan) and many small pen-flourish initials in red and blue. Numerous marginal glosses. On p. 325/326, upside-down, a very faded 15th century (?) script, on the inner back cover the imprint of two pages of a Carolingian manuscript, at least in part from Origines, Homilia VIII in Ezechielem.

This manuscript is a complete exemplar of Peter Lombard's four books of the Sentences (Libri quatuor sententiarum) (pp. 4-430), preceded and followed by a series of Latin verses, partially in leonine hexameter (pp. 3 and 430-431). This neat thirteenth-century copy in two columns is completely rubricated, and the margins likewise have in red ink the abbreviated names of the authors cited in the text. Citations are sometimes indicated by a long vertical red stroke, which occasionally ends with a fleuron. An elegant, red or red-and-black initial introduces the prologue (p. 4a) and the four books of the Sentences (pp. 8b, 126b, 237a, and 315a), as well the table of the chapters of books II and III (pp. 123 and 235a). The manuscript has a fifteenth-century wooden binding, typical of the Abbey of St. Gall.

This miscellany of Aristotelian logic and dialectics (AL 1160) was produced as a single work and written by various hands in textualis. It was then commented in the margins by various hands, sometimes with multiple hands in the same comment. The first part comprises the Isagoge by Porphyry (pp. 1-17), Aristotle's Categoriae (pp. 17-46) and De interpretatione (pp. 46-63) in the translation of Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius, the anonymous twelfth-century Aristotelian compilation Liber sex principiorum (pp. 63-78) and Boethius' own De divisione (pp. 78-96). The second part begins with Boethius' De differentiis topicis (pp. 97-148). The third part contains Boethius' translation of Aristotle's Topica (pp. 149-287). This is followed by Boethius' translation of Aristotle's De sophisticis elenchis (pp. 288-322). The fourth part begins with Boethius' translation of Aristotle's Analytica priora (pp. 323-392). The remainder of p. 392 is ruled but otherwise empty. Page 393 is completely blank. Page 394 was used for notes. The fifth part contains the Latin translation of Aristotle's Analytica posteriora (pp. 395-434). The volume has a green (or blue) cover decorated with large rhombi (ink or scudding decoration). The endband is finished in a natural shade of blue. The volume originally had two eyelet fastenings with simple holes stamped through the bottom board. There are multiple names noted on the top pastedown: dasz buch ist [getilgt] wirt oder sinez bruoder [sic] […] Rug Hanns […] Jacob Wirt von Sant Gallen […] Maister Cuonrat […]. Page 41 is stamped with the 1553-1564 St. Gallen library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer. Numerous details have been added: manicules (p. 36, 93, 276, 302, 352, 416, 432 und 434), topical diagrams (p. 132), a tournament scene (p. 241), a banderole with the year ·1·5·6·7· written on it (p. 244, 245), nudes (p. 254, 432, rear pastedown), vignettes (p. 300), a secant (p. 350), Aristotelian categories (p. 354, 366) as well as crowns (rear pastedown).

A 13th/14th century philosophical manuscript containing Latin versions of the Liber de definitionibus by Isaac ben Salomon Israeli († ca. 932), a Jew who lived in Egypt and Tunisia, together with the work De quinque essentiis by the Arab philosopher and mathematician Al-Kindi (Latinized as Alkindus; † 873), the Liber de causis, erroneously attributed to Aristotle, as well as the beginning of the work De differentia spiritus et animae by the Arab philosopher Qusta ibn Luqa (Latinized as Costa ben Luca; 820-912). The codex is bound in an extremely damaged Kopert (limp vellum) binding.

The first part of the manuscript transmits on pp. 3–44 the Canones in motibus caelestium corporum, instructions for use and an explanation of the tables that follow, along with an addition in the same script and gathering on pp. 44–46. In the second part follows on pp. 47–203 the Tabulae Toletanae. These are tables to compare various computations of time, on the calculation of planetary movements and eclipses, on spherical astronomy and with repertories of stars and places. The small script, between a Gothic minuscule and a simplified textualis, dates rather from the second half of the thirteenth century or the first half of the fourteenth century (contrary to Scherrer), and the tendency of the round terminal s to finish below the line suggests Italian origin. On p. 204 there is a Zodiac, the Marian hymn Gaude virgo gratiosa (AH 9, p. 54) and a further, roughly contemporary text. According to the entry N. 102 on p. 3, the manuscript came to the Abbey Library in 1768 as part of the legacy of Ägidius Tschudi (1505–1572). The cardboard binding with leather-reinforced spine and corners, along with the paper bifolia that serve as pastedown and flyleaves (pp. 1/2 and p. 205/206), come from the decades around 1800.

This manuscript (also called the “St. Galler Epenhandschrift”) is written in two columns in a very uniform manner by three anonymous primary scribes and four secondary scribes; it offers a fine version of a unique collection of Middle High German heroic and knightly poetry. It contains “Parzival” (pp. 5−288; version D) by Wolfram von Eschenbach, the Song of the Nibelungs (pp. 291−416; version B) with the following lament (pp. 416−451; version B), the poem “Karl der Grosse” (pp. 452−558; version C) by der Stricker, the verse narrative “Willehalm” (pp. 561−691; version G) by Wolfram von Eschenbach, as well as five sung gnomic verses by Friedrich von Sonnenburg (p. 693; version G). Until 1768, when the manuscript was purchased by the Monastery of St. Gall, this volume certainly also contained fragments of the epic poems “Die Kindheit Jesu” by Konrad von Fussesbrunnen and Unser vrouwen hinvart by Konrad von Heimesfurt. These two works were removed from the manuscript of epic poems before 1820 and are now held in the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin (mgf 1021) and the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe (Cod. K 2037), respectively. The manuscript, illustrated with 78 uniformly executed initials by unknown artists from the miniature painting school of Padua, was commissioned by a wealthy client who was interested in Middle High German epic poems. The first owner known by name was the Swiss polymath and universal scholar Aegidius Tschudi (1505−1572) from Glarus, whose estate of manuscripts the Monastery of St. Gall was able to acquire in 1768.

Ovid's Pontics constitute the only text of this gothic-minuscule manuscript copied by a single thirteenth-century hand. Divided into four books in modern editions, the 46 letters, poetic elegies related to the poet's exile in Tomis, here follow without interruption. Simple initials painted in red distinguish the letters from each other until p. 66; afterwards, there are only the blank spaces for the initials that were not produced. In addition to maniculae in the margins, there are numerous interlinear and marginal glosses, which more or less date to the same period as the text's script.

Notker the German, Old High German translation and commentary on De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii of Martianus Capella; two commentaries on the gospels from the 12th and 13th century; a translation from Latin into Old High German plus commentary on the first two books of Martianus Capella's († 439) work The Marriage of Philology and Mercury by the St. Gall monk Notker the German written in the 11th century. The two commentaries on the gospels date from the 12th and 13th centuries. The Martianus Capella part is a palimpsest, for the most part written over an older, barely legible text of the Institutiones Grammaticae of Priscianus of Caesarea.

This parchment manuscript transmits on pp. 3–87 Geoffrey of Vinsauf's Poetry nova, a guide, written in over 2,000 hexameters, to composing poems. The hexameters are arranged in 25 verse-lines in the center of the page, and accompanied by contemporarily-produced commnetaries and glosses. The script, a simplified textualis, dates from the second half of the thirteenth or the first half of the fourteenth century (contrary to Scherrrer). The stamp of Abbot Diethlm Blarer (1553–1564) appears on p. 9 and p. 88; p. 1 bears the former shelfmark S. n. 312, as well as a note on content by Pius Kolb; p. 2 has a note by Franz Josef Mone from 1819. The half-leather volume reveals a romanesque board-binding.

The manuscript transmits a treatise on Latin grammar, apparently missing its beginning. According to Bursill-Hall (p. 229), this is an anonymous commentary on Priscian's Institutiones grammaticae. The two-column text is divided only by occasional capitals in the same ink as the text. The small minuscule script dates to the thirteenth century (contrary to Scherrer). The parchment leaves often have irregular margins and their size varies from gathering to gathering. On p. 145 can be found the stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer (1553–1564). On p. 3 Pius Kolk wrote the former shelfmark D. n. 268 and a note on the content. The cardboard binding with leather-reinforced spine and corners, along with the paper pastedowns and flyleaves (pp. 1/2, 148/149) come from the decades around 1800.

This volume consists of two manuscripts brought together, the first in parchment dating from the end of the thirteenth century and paginated in black ink from 7 to 118, the second in fifteenth-century paper and paginated in red pencil from 1 to 144. Judging by the binding, they were brought together in the nineteenth century, the period when the librarian of the Abbey of Saint Gall, Franz Weidmann, described the diverse contents of these two manuscripts on the first flyleaves (pp. 1-2). The first manuscript, probably copied in the south of France, contains a Latin poem, Certamen animae, composed by Raimond Astruc (pp. 7-95 in black ink), followed by another piece by the same author, Epistola de consolatione (pp. 95-98 in black ink). Letters of Charles I of Anjou, some verse texts concerning his victories, and moral satires (against the vices of the world, or against the religious orders) round out this first part (Delisle 1916). According to a note, a former Jesuit turned Reformation preacher in Montbéliard gave this manuscript to Bartholomäus Schobinger in Saint-Gall in 1598 (p. 5 in black ink). The second part of Cod. Sang. 1008, copied by a single fifteenth-century scribe, begins with the text by the Carthusian Heinrich Eger de Kalkar, De puritate conscientiae (pp. 1-17 in red pencil). A dialogue in Latin prose between Death and Master Polycarpus, Colloquium de morte (Pirożyńska 1966), follows (pp. 18-25 in red pencil). Then come meditations on the Passion of Christ (pp. 26-47 in red pencil), meditations of Saint Anselm (pp. 48-67 in red pencil), and, further, Bonaventure's De institutione novitiorum (pp. 116-139 in red pencil).

This manuscript transmits sermons for the liturgical year and was copied by a regular hand in a thirteenth-century gothic minuscule. It is incomplete at the beginning and the end. The sermons, numbered in the upper margin, run from VII (Dominica iiii. in quadragesima) to LXXXVIII (In vigilia epiphanie domini). At the beginning of each sermon there is a simple two-line-high red initial and a rubricated title indicating the day on which the sermon was to be read. On the basis of the stamp of the Abbot Diethelm Blarer (p. 410), the manuscript was present in the library of St. Gall since at least the middle of the sixteenth century. The cardboard binding, covered in blank parchment and adorned with green-silk ribbons as clasps, dates from the eighteenth/nineteenth century.

This parchment manuscript contains Latin sermons by Berthold of Regensburg († 1272) in a copy from the second half of the thirteenth century or the first half of the fourteenth century. It begins with the feast of St. Stephen Protomartyr (26 December; p. 1a) and stretches to the feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist (29 August; p. 181b). There then follow additional sermons and other texts, including two that bear the titles De passione (p. 197a) and De resurrectione (p. 199b) respectively. On p. 209 the text breaks off at the end of the right column. Then follows on pp. 210a–215a in a larger script what are apparently sermons on the Conversio sancti Pauli (p. 210a) and on the Purificatio beatae Mariae (p. 213a), although both of these feasts already appear in the original part (p. 23b and 31b). In the fourteenth century, another hand wrote a German text in the right column of p. 215 (Wilt du wizzen wie …). According to the note on p. 216, in 1433, the chaplain Jodocus Maiger gave this book to Nicholaus Jeuchin or Jenchin, parish priest of St. Mangen (a church outside of the city of St. Gallen). Worthy of note are the decorative, four-color stitching with a zig-zag pattern on p. 111/112, the pen drawing on p. 150a, as well as the library stamp of Abbot Diethlem Blarer, from the period 1553–1563 on p. 216. The wooden binding probably comes from the fifteenth century.

The largest part of this manuscript contains sermons copied in two columns by multiple scribes (pp. 1-144). The last part (pp. 145-157) is smaller in size (19 x 17 cm) and is copied for the most part in a single column; it contains leonine verses and versified sayings. Possessed by the St. Gall Abbey Library since at least the mid-sixteenth century (see the stamp of Abbot Diethlem Blarer, p. 120), the manuscript was rebound in the seventeenth/eighteenth century in a binding of blank parchment glued on cardboard, which closes with green silk laces.

The parchment bookblock (pp. 5–162) contains in its core on pp. 8–162 a collection of Latin sermons on the feasts of the ecclesiastical year (temporale and sanctorale) in a small gothic minuscule of the thirteenth century. At the top of p. 7 is a table with Greek letters as item numbers and below an incipit in red majuscules, that is partially covered by the library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer from the period 1553–1564. The single leaf p. 5/6 contains a table of contents of the sermons from the beginning of the codex to the Assumption of the Virgin, which probably was added in the second half of the fourteenth century. The collection begins with the sermons for Advent (p. 8) and runs through the Exaltation of the Cross (p. 109) and to the Assumption of the Virgin (p. 112). Additional sermons follow, including an Ad populum (p. 157, 162), before the text breaks off at the end of p. 162. The sermons are mostly introduced by a two-to-three-line decorative initial in the colors red, blue, and green. The binding, as well as the paper flyleaves (pp. 1–4, 163–190), probably come from the end of the seventeenth or the eighteenth century.

The manuscript was written in a textualis probably in the second half of the thirteenth or the first half of the fourteenth century. The old foliation runs from I to CLXXXIII and from CCLXV to CCLXXX (pencil foliation: 184–209). The current foliation is A–B in pencil and then I–CLXXXIII in red ink, and finally 184–216 in pencil. The table of contents, inserted in the fourteenth century on the last, separate gathering (fol. 211r–214v) uses Roman numerals from I to CCLXXVIII without gaps. This shows that several quires were lost at some point after the production of the table of contents, a fact that was already noted on the table of contents in the fifteenth century with “vacat”. The surviving leaves transmit, in the first place, sermons of Berthold of Regensburg († 1272) on Sundays and the Feasts of Saints (fol. Ir–CLXXIIIIv) and then – owing to the mentioned loss of leaves – only the end of his sermon on the common of saints (fol. 184r–184v). In between and afterwards are other sermons (Sermones ad religiosos, Sermones ad speciales) or spiritual texts by the same hand, although at the end (fol. 209r–210r) by another hand. According to the table of contents, there follow (fol. 214r–215v) further entries, probably from the fourteenth century, including a few in the German language. According to the ownership mark Liber sancti Galli on fol. Br, the codex was in the Abbey of St. Gall in the fifteenth century at the latest.

This small-format manuscript contains for the most part sermons (pp. 3–49). They have been numbered (1–39) in the margin by a later hand, which also wrote the title Sermones de tempore and the ownership mark Liber s. Galli on p. 3. According to Schneyer, Repertorium der lateinischen Sermones des Mittelalters für die Zeit von 1150–1350, II.766 und IV.49 and Hamesse, Repertorium initiorum manuscriptorum latinorum medii aevi, No. 31477, the authors of these sermons include Lothario dei Segni (Innocent III), Hugh of Saint-Cher, and Nicholaus de Gorran. A wide range of texts follows on p. 49: seven short letters or letter formularies on pp. 49–51 (including from the Abbot of Isny to the Abbot of Blaubeuren, from the Duke of Bavaria to two bailiffs, from parents to their son, studying in Padua, and from the student to his parents); mnemonic aids on the Eucharist, the duties of a confessor, the seven sacraments, etc. (p. 51); an additional sermon (p. 52) (by Lucas de Bitonto; Schneyer, Repertorium, IV.56, No. 88); the Fifteen Portents of the Last Judgment (p. 53); Odo of Cheriton's Parabola De rustico et eius domino (p. 54); a Tractatus naturalis, inc: Cum alterius nature sit truncus, alterius surculus (pp. 55–62); a commentary on Aristotle's De anima, inc: Bonorum honorabilium noticiam [...] subiectum huius libri de anima est anima prout est coniuncta corpori (p. 63-77). The manuscript, bereft of ornamentation, is bound in an early-modern cardboard binding that has been covered in fragments of a printed missal.

This manuscript predominantly contains sermons. It begins (pp. 1–279) with the Speculum ecclesiae by Honorius Augustodunensis (around 1080 – 1150/1151). This is followed by 20 verses each on virtues and vices in Leonine hexameter (pp. 279–281), each followed by a brief explanation in prose. On the otherwise blank p. 282, there is a pen and ink drawing of the Apostle Paul. Following on pp. 283–411, there are the Sermones by Mauritius de Sulliaco (Maurice de Sully, around 1120 – 1196), with a list of chapters and a prologue on p. 283. On pp. 411-414, there is a commentary on the Apostles' Creed (Inc. Quo nomine vocatur hec doctrina apostolica symbolum, Expl. latine dicitur vere fideliter fiat). The very short text on p. 415 deals with Communion for the excommunicated (Inc. Communicans excommunicato, Expl. ad correctionem communicabis excommunicato).

Collected Fragments Volume I from the Abbey Library of St. Gall ("Veterum Fragmentorum manuscriptis codicibus detractorum collectio tomus primus"). The volume contains, among many varied single pages and fragmentary texts, fragments from the Aeneid and the Georgics by Vergil from the late 4th century which are significant to textual history (11 pages and 8 small strips), 17 smaller and larger bits of text from a pre-Vulgate Vetus-Latina version of the Gospels from the early 5th century, fragments of a copy of the comedies of Terence from the 10th century, documents from the 9th through 15th centuries, small fragments in Hebrewscript, and the "St. Galler Glauben und Beichte II" (formulas for shrift or confession, together with professions of faith from the 11th century). Pater Ildefons von Arx (1755-1833) assembled this composite volume in the year 1822 and dedicated it to his former supervisor, Abbey Librarian Pater Johann Nepomuk Hauntinger (1756-1823).

The halakhic text Shibbolei ha-Leket ("Ears of Gleaning") by Zedekia ben Abraham Anav of Rom (ca. 1225-1297) contains one of the first attempts of codifying Jewish religious law in Italy and of presenting a systematic overview thereof. The text is divided into 12 sections of a total of 372 paragraphs; its content addresses the rules concerning the order of the prayers and the laws for Shabbat, holidays and feasts, in addition to other halakhic subjects, which are presented from a markedly Ashkenazic perspective. The manuscript is not dated. It was copied by the scribes Moses and Samuel either during the lifetime or shortly after the death of the author and thus is one of the earliest surviving copies of the text.

This is the earliest known manuscript of Moses of Coucy's classic legal code and also the earliest dated codex in the Braginsky Collection. The Sefer Mitzvot Gadol (abbreviated the SeMaG) became a major and accepted source of halakhic rulings. It was frequently quoted and abridged; many commentaries were composed on it. The manuscript was copied by Hayyim ben Meir ha-Levi in 1288, possibly in Sierre, (Switzerland). This hypothesis is based on the fact that in the Biblothèque national in Paris there is another manuscript (ms. hébr.370) of the same work, by the same scribe, which is assumed to have been copied in Sierre a few years later than the Braginsky manuscript. More than two centuries after the writing of the manuscript, in 1528, Joseph ben Kalonymos acquired it in Posen (Poland) and completed the few leaves that were missing by that time.

Leaf from a calendar — the months January and February — from a liturgical manuscript (Psalter? breviary?). The calendar was inserted into a cornice resembling arcades. For the month of January, the figure of St. Peter with his keys is depicted at right, while a medallion at the top shows an activity typical for this month: a man warming himself by a fire. For February, there is St. Matthias and in the medallion at the top a man trimming a tree in order to obtain wood. Signs of a central fold reveal that the leaf had been used as a cover, probably for a book.

Fragment with a depiction of Christ before Pilate, from an I-Initial. This initial consisted of several medallions and decorated page f. 87a of the gradual of St. Katharinental. In the 19th century, this leaf was removed from the gradual, and the medallions were sold separately. Of the 9 or 10 medallions that originally made up the body of the letter I, there are known today, in addition to this one, medallions with the following scenes: the Last Supper (Zurich, Swiss National Museum, LM 71410), the Arrest of Christ (Nürnberg, Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Inv. Among other items from the 9th century, this manuscript contains the sole exemplar of a document explaining the reasons for the meeting between King Charlemagne and Pope Leo III, the "Aachener Karlsepos " (Carolingean Epic of Aachen or Paderborn Epic) in 799 as well as another sole exemplar, the so called "Carmina Sangallensia", verses on the wall paintings in the former Gallusmünster (Church of St. Gallus) in the monastery of St. Gall. Further components of this manuscript include theological-canonical treatises as well as sermons from the 14th and 15th centuries.

Manuscript compilation containing texts from the 9th through 13th centuries from the monastery of St. Gall. Among them are important copies of works from Alcuin of York († 804; including De dialectica and De rhetorica et virtutibus). Between the two named texts by Alcuin is a full page pen and ink sketch representing the Maiestas Domini, interpreted by art historian Anton von Euw as a reproduction of the now lost cupola mosaic of the Aachen cathedral. The opening text is a copy of 13th century canonical texts by Bishop Sicardus of Cremona (about 1150-1215; Super decreta).

The present Codex contains the complete text of the Dialogus (ca. 1110–1120) of Petrus Alfonsi, a converted Jew from Huesca (since 1096 Kingdom of Aragon). The Dialogus is a polemic and apologetic work, introducing (for the time) innovative, in view of the author «rational» argumentation against Jewish religion and Islam. The work spread quickly and had significant influence on Christian polemics especially in the 13th and 14th century.

This elegant illuminated copy of the Sefer Moreh Nevukhim (Guide to the Perplexed) by Moses Maimonides was produced in Christian Spain in 1292. It is a copy of the Hebrew translation of the work made in 1204 by Samuel ben Judah Ibn Tibbon (1150-1230). The manuscript arrived in Italy either after the Jewish persecutions of 1391 or the ensuing expulsion of the Jews from the Iberian peninsula in 1492. It was in the possession of the renowned Bolognese Sforno family before reappearing in the early 17th century in the hands of the Italian Jewish apostate and inquisitor Renato da Modena. After more than a century, the manuscript reappeared in the possession of Johann Caspar Ulrich (1705-1768) a Protestant theologian, who donated it in 1762 to the Bibliotheca Ecclesia Carolina, the chapter library of the reformed Grossmünster church of Zurich. In 1835, when the chapter was dissolved, the books and manuscripts of the chapter library became part of the new Cantonal Library in Zurich. Finally in 1917, the holdings of this library, among others, formed the new Zentralbibliothek, where the manuscript still remains today.

This Italian manuscript is a manual containing the laws of ritual slaughter (Shekhitah) and forbidden foods (Treifah), taken from the Babylonian Talmud tractate Ḥulin. These laws have been commented on by two medieval rabbinical authorities, included in the manuscript. The first is Judah ben Benjamin ha-Rofe Anav of Rome (Rivevan, d. after 1280), whose commentary to the laws makes reference to customs practiced by the Jewish community of Rome, such as an important ruling taken by the elders of Rome in 1280 at the Bozzechi Synagogue, which has been edited in the description. The second author, whose work is partially copied in the manual, is the leading Talmud authority for the Jewish communities in 11th century North Africa and Spain, Isaac ben Jacob Alfasi (Rif, 1013-1103). The first three chapters of a commentary on the Babylonian Talmud tractate Ḥulin, taken from his magnum opus entitled the Sefer ha-Halakhot, have been copied into this manual. This latter work played a fundamental role in the development of halakha and is the most important legal code prior to the Mishneh Torah by Maimonides (Rambam, 1135-1204).

The Rheinau Psalter, Ms. Rh. 167, is among the preeminent treasures of the Zurich Central Library. Its miniatures are a product of the highest level of artistry of the High Gothic painting of this period around 1260, which is also true for the sophisticated color and painting techniques that were used. In contrast, the script, while of quite good quality, cannot be counted among the highest examples of the art of writing. The commissioner of the manuscript must be sought in the area of Lake Constance, probably in the city of Constance, which was very important in the politics and church politics at the time of the interregnum. In 1817, Father Blasius Hauntinger purchased the manuscript from Melchior Kirchhofer in Schaffhausen for the Benedictine Rheinau Abbey; in 1863, the manuscript, along with the Rheinau Abbey Library, became part of the Cantonal Library (today Central Library) in Zurich.
