This manuscript, in a strikingly narrow format, was created in Mainz and, as a gift from the Carthusians living there, it later came to the Carthusian monastery of Basel. It contains a large number of short and very short texts: in addition to some sermons, it mainly contains excerpts from theological, church historical and political treatises, including some in German. This codex from the holdings of the Carthusian Monastery of Basel contains as a first part a treatise about the appropriate penance for various transgressions against commandments and sacraments. A second part consists of a collection of Latin hymns with an interlinear translation into German, as well as a loose translation into German as continuous text, in part also combined with a short interpretation. This is followed by texts about the mass and several Opuscula by Gregory of Nazianzus, a letter by Johannes Heynlin de Lapide about the qualities of a good priest, and a brief text by Heinrich Arnoldi about a sermon on Mary. This Greek manuscript, dating primarily from the tenth century, contains the letters of Paul along with chains of commentaries. It shares similarities with the manuscripts of the so-called “scriptorium of Ephrem” of Constantinople. In that same city, in the fifteenth century, John of Ragusa, legate of the Council of Basel, bought the codex, which he then bequeathed after his death to the Dominicans of Basel. Erasmus used it for his text of the Pauline Epistles as part of his first edition of the Greek New Testament (1516). Erasmus' printer, Johannes Froben, left annotations on the pages. (mal)

This manuscript, which was copied in Norman Sicily, contains Origen's Commentary on the Song of Songs in the version translated from Greek into Latin by Rufinus of Aquileia (about 345-about 411). The text comprises the first four of the ten books of which Origen's original text must have consisted. It is preceded by a prologue by Jerome and is followed by short prayer by Gregory of Nazianzus, also translated into Latin by Rufinus of Aquileia. Origen's commentary, which presents Christ as the bridegroom and the Church, or also the individual soul, as the bride, influenced spiritual interpretations of the Song of Songs for centuries. (rou)

The manuscript consists of two parts and contains various ascetic texts. The first part (1-24) was written by various unskilled hands in a Rhaetian-influenced minuscule which can be dated to the 8th/9th century and localized in a scriptorium in northern Italy or in Switzerland. This collection contains, together with other texts, a collection of Canons of ecclesiastical law called the Collectio Quesnelliana. It was probably produced in a scriptorium in northeastern France and was later held by the Court Library of Charlemagne. In the 11th century it was placed in the Cologne Cathedral library, where it was annotated by Bernold von Konstanz. It was later owned by suffragan bishop of Constance Jakob Johann Mirgel (1559-1629) before making its way, together with a group of his books, to the cloister at Einsiedeln. (ber)

This manuscript of collected works is important to textual history and contains various works by Bishop Cyprian of Carthage († 258), including De dominica oratione, De mortalitate and De opere et eleemosynis, together with a tract by an unknown Irish author, De duodecim abusivis saeculi written by an unknown author, and the invocation of Gregory of Nazianz to the residents of Nazianz in Latin translation (Ad cives Nazianzenos gravi timore perculsos et praefectum irascentem) copied near the end of the 9th century at the Abbey of St. Gall. A manuscript compilation produced outside of St. Gall in about 800, written and illuminated unusually colorfully with numerous small initials, possibly at the Cloister of St. Denis near Paris. It consists of a large number of texts and excerpts, especially from the works of Isidore of Seville (Liber Sententiarum, Liber Differentiarum, Etymologiae), but also including texts by Augustine, Caesarius of Arles, Defensor (Liber scintillarum), Jerome, Gregory the Great, Eucherius (Formulae spiritalis intelligentiae) and many other authors. It contains, among other items, a liturgical study by Abbot Walahfrid Strabo of Reichenau (808/09-849) Liber de exordiis et incrementis quarundam in observationibus ecclesiasticis rerum, the first western European reference work on liturgical history, the so called Ordines Romani, a liturgical study by Amalar of Trier, the first Capitular of Bishop Theodulf of Orléans, two treatises about baptism and the mass attributed to Alcuin as well as the Capitular documents (diocesan legislative documents) of Haito, Bishop of Basel and Abbot of Reichenau. Liturgical manuscript from the Cistercian Nuns' Cloister Günterstal near Freiburg im Breisgau, written by various hands, partly in Latin and partly in German. The manuscript was purchased in the year 1782 by the St. Gall monk Gall Metzler (1743-1820), parish priest in Ebringen near Freiburg, which was owned by St. Gall; it contains, among other texts, a calendar (p. 1-12), sermons (p. 57-213), pericopes from the Epistles and from the Gospels (p. 222-271), further liturgical texts and prayers for the celebration of the Commune sanctorum , an incomplete copy (p. 490-624) of the popular treatise Büchlein der ewigen Weisheit (The little Book of Eternal Wisdom) by the Constance mystic Henry Suso († 1366), the Latin Gospel of Nicodemus (p. 659-695), a German prose version of the Gospel of Nicodemus (p. 695-761), as well as the Lamentationes Jeremie in Latin (p. 762-770). Together with Cod. Sang. 1140 and Cod. Sang. 1141, as well as probably six more now lost volumes, this manuscript was part of a large Günterstal lectionary, containing sermons as well as martyrological and liturgical texts. Several pages (for example between p. 489 and p. 490) were already torn out or cut out before the pagination at the end of the 18th century. (smu)
