Search: the scholarly manuscript descriptions can be searched either using Full Text or using specific
access points (Author, Manuscript title, Text title, Place of origin, Incipit, Explicit, and Decoration). Search results
include description text snippets that contain the search term and, depending on the search, either a link to the beginning
of the appropriate manuscript or a direct link to the desired location in the text (Incipit or Text title, for example).
Results for search by Decoration also include sample page images. The Search function currently supports the following commands
and operators:
*
(Wildcard): a search for Gall* will find St. Gallen and Gallus. Wildcards can be used at
the beginning and at the end of a search term.
Quotation marks: quotation marks can be used to find entire sentences or groups of search terms in a particular order
(exact phrase queries).
If multiple search terms are entered without quotation marks, an either-or search is conducted. This means that
Freiburger Perikopen will produce many more results than "Freiburger Perikopen".
~ (Fuzzy search, search for similar words):
using the ~ (Tilde), all words similar to the search term will also be returned. This means a search for Stricker~ will
also find Strickler, Strecker and Strichen.

Book of Hours of Jean de Gingins
This Book of Hours following the liturgical custom of Paris contains a large number of private prayers in Latin and French, most of them unpublished. As indicated in the colophon on page 193r, the book was produced in 1421 in Paris in the workshop of the bookseller Jacquet Lescuier. It was commissioned, or perhaps only bought, by Jean II de Gingins, born around 1385 and died either at the end of 1461 or the beginning of 1462; he had his coat of arms painted on p. 193v. The miniatures were executed by several illuminators, among them the “Guise Master,” the “Bedford Master” and a student associated with the “Boucicaut Master.” The last representative of the Gingin-La Sarraz family left the castle to her brother-in-law, Henri de Mandrot, who in turn gave this manuscript and the family archive to the state archive of the canton of Vaud in 1920. Ludwig van Beethoven, Missa solemnis op. 123, Gloria (sketch). Autographic score on paper
According to Beethoven, this is his “most accomplished work.” It
celebrates the consecration of his student and sponsor, Archduke Rudolph, as Archbishop of Olomouc (Olmütz) in 1818. This mass was begun in 1818; it was completed three years after the
ceremony and was presented to the cardinal and archbishop on 19 March 1823. This mass in D major seeks to express and communicate, in
the words of the composer himself, a state of mind, a religious Stimmung. It is written for a large orchestra and consists
of five movements (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) The sections of the Gloria, imposed by the meaning of the text, constitute a sonata: allegro in D major, Gratias in B flat and back to the allegro; then the larghetto and as a third movement the allegro, Quoniam, the fugue In gloria Dei Patris, with a cyclical return to the theme of the Gloria in the principal tone. The music comments on the text: royal acclamation, heartfelt gratitude, divine omnipotence; then, in contrast: prayers, shouts and murmurs of the supplicants of this world (miserere nobis). Purchased at Sotheby's, London, 4 February 1952. (bib)
