Search: the scholarly manuscript descriptions can be searched either using Full Text or using specific
access points (Author, Manuscript title, Text title, Place of origin, Incipit, Explicit, and Decoration). Search results
include description text snippets that contain the search term and, depending on the search, either a link to the beginning
of the appropriate manuscript or a direct link to the desired location in the text (Incipit or Text title, for example).
Results for search by Decoration also include sample page images. The Search function currently supports the following commands
and operators:
*
(Wildcard): a search for Gall* will find St. Gallen and Gallus. Wildcards can be used at
the beginning and at the end of a search term.
Quotation marks: quotation marks can be used to find entire sentences or groups of search terms in a particular order
(exact phrase queries).
If multiple search terms are entered without quotation marks, an either-or search is conducted. This means that
Freiburger Perikopen will produce many more results than "Freiburger Perikopen".
~ (Fuzzy search, search for similar words):
using the ~ (Tilde), all words similar to the search term will also be returned. This means a search for Stricker~ will
also find Strickler, Strecker and Strichen.

Commentarius in Ecclesiasten; Explanatio in canticum canticorum; Excerpta varia
A composite manuscript consisting of two distinct parts: 1) a 9th century St. Gall copy of the commentary of Jerome on the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes and the commentary of Bishop Justus of Seu de Urgel (Urgelitanus) on the Song of Songs, 2) a collection of manuscripts of mainly patristic content, including excerpts from the works of Jerome, Benedict, Eucherius and Augustine. The manuscript, still in its original Carolingian binding, is also called the Egino-Codex and is supposed to have been produced in about the year 800 at the cloister of Reichenau by a group of Veronese scribes who had settled on the island of Reichenau together with their former (Veronese) bishop (796-799) Egino after he stepped down from his office. The volume contains, among many varied single pages and fragmentary texts, fragments from the Aeneid and the Georgics by Vergil from the late 4th century which are significant to textual history (11 pages and 8 small strips), 17 smaller and larger bits of text from a pre-Vulgate Vetus-Latina version of the Gospels from the early 5th century, fragments of a copy of the comedies of Terence from the 10th century, documents from the 9th through 15th centuries, small fragments in Hebrewscript, and the "St. Galler Glauben und Beichte II" (formulas for shrift or confession, together with professions of faith from the 11th century). Pater Ildefons von Arx (1755-1833) assembled this composite volume in the year 1822 and dedicated it to his former supervisor, Abbey Librarian Pater Johann Nepomuk Hauntinger (1756-1823). (smu)
