Manuscript Summary:
Manuscript Summary
This abundantly illuminated breviary for the use of the diocese of Besançon was probably written in the first half of the fourteenth century. It is decorated with red and blue rubrics, numerous initials on a gold background, drolleries on the lower margin as well as calendar drawings with zodiacal signs and the peasants’ monthly labors. Particularly noteworthy are three full-page illuminations: Christopher (p. 176), the Adoration of the Magi (p. 178), and the Crucifixion (p. 179). The naming of regional saints suggests a Besançon origin. It was later in the possession of the Solothurn patrician family Wallier, and possibly arrived in Fischingen by way of the Abbots Augustine Bloch or Franz Fröhlicher. (glo)
