Hélinant, de Froidmont (1160-1230)
This volume contains a large number of texts about theology and canon law. All of it was written by one scribe, the Carthusian Heinrich von Vullenhoe of Basel. In a long note he provides information about the motives that guided him during the compilation: Since as a Carthusian he could not himself act as a preacher, he only had the possibility to spread the Word of God with his hands, i.e. by writing books. He expresses the hope that this compilation he has organized may strengthen the pious on their path and may offer an occasion for remorse for the sinners. Many of the texts that Vullenhoe has combined in this volume refer directly to the Carthusian Order. One example is the treatise de esu carnium, which defends the Carthusian practice of renouncing meat as a foodstuff. Many texts have also been handed down in other manuscripts from the Carthusian Monastery of Basel.

This composite manuscript contains a total of 21 texts of Old French literature; in part these are unique records that survive only in this manuscript. The major part consists of romances from the great saga cycles such as the Garin le Loherain, Perceval, etc., which often comprise several thousand verses; the manuscript also contains several prose chronicles such as Ernoul's history of the crusades and other smaller pieces of varied content. The manuscript is richly illustrated with several hundred large initials; it probably originated in Picardy.

This miscellany was assembled by Friedrich von Amberg (Guardian of the Franciscan Convent of Fribourg, † 1432) from various earlier compilations and text fragments. The volume, divided into eight parts, has an extensive collection of exempla (Part 1), excerpts from the Gesta Romanorum (Parts 3, 4, 5 und 6), from the De cognicione of Helinand of Froidmont (Part 2), from Robert Holcot's Moralitates (Part 6), from Hugh of Folieto's De avibus (Part 7) and Nicholas of Hanapis‘ Liber de exemplis Sacrae scripturae (Part 8). The back cover and flyleaf contain a large part of a Fribourg charter. The formerly chained volume with a white-leather cover was restored in 2021 by Carole Jeanneret.
